These Butterbur plants were growing along the path of Town Brook in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is a member of the sunflower family of plants. It is a perennial plant that grows in the wet, marshy ground near streams. The white, pink or green flowers grow on large spikes appear in Spring. Their large rhubarb-like leaves were supposedly used to wrap butter in when the weather was warm, giving this herb its distinctive name.
Known for its medicinal purposes, it was used for centuries and still used as a natural remedy for many conditions. Today, it is available in many over-the-counter products in softgel capsule form.
