Description
The National Monument to the Forefathers is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts and was dedicated on August 1, 1889. It honors the Mayflower Pilgrims' ideals as later generally embraced by the United States. It is thought to be the world's largest solid granite monument and is the third-tallest statue in the United States. The 81-foot-tall monument was commissioned by the Pilgrim Society.
Upon the four buttresses also are seated figures emblematical of the principles upon which the Pilgrims founded their Commonwealth. In this collage, the individual statues (counter clockwise) are Faith, Law, Morality, Liberty and Education.
