Description
General William Bancroft began building his retirement home on Gibbet Hill in Groton, Massachusetts in 1906, He named it Shawfieldmont. When he ran out of money, he sold the property in 1918 to Dr. Harold Ayres who turned the place into a private sanitarium. For $20 a week, those with TB and other ailments stayed there.
By 1930, the Groton Hunt Club used the bungalow for hunting parties, dances, dinners and outings. In 1932 a fire started by careless trespassers with fireworks destroyed most of the bungalow leaving only the ruins of the observation tower intact.
Today it remains open to the public. You may hike to the top of the hill to visit the castle ruins and enjoy the fabulous views.
