Description
This beach plum tree/shrub was growing along the path nearest the Plymouth Rock Canopy. I saw a woman picking and eating them. I asked her what they were. She told me these were beach plums. They resemble purple grapes. I tested one, and it was very bitter.
Beach plums are native to the east coast of the U.S. and can be found from Maine to Maryland. This deciduous shrub is salt-tolerant and cold-hardy. They can be eaten out of your hand or used for beach plum jelly.
